Moving your home yourself:
Depending on what you need to move and how far you have to move it, renting a van and doing it yourself may be a reasonable choice.
If you choose the do-it-yourself method, keep the following in mind:

You will need assistance loading and unloading the truck, so make sure you will have helpers on the day of your move.

You may get a lower rental rate if you can move at an off-peak time, so consider this possibility when scheduling your move.

Rent a van that's the right size for your move. The staff from the rental facility will be able to advise you on this.

Ask the rental company if they can provide equipment such as quilted pads, furniture dollies, a stepladder for loading the upper area of the truck and so on.

Find out what coverage options the rental company offers to cover you while you're driving the truck.

Check with your insurance broker to make sure your home insurance covers your belongings while in transit.

If your move is a long-distance one, you may have to pay an extra charge to drop off the truck at your new location. Alternatively, you may have to drive the truck back to where you rented it.

To calculate loading times, allow at least one hour per 1,000 pounds of cargo. Unloading times will be similar. A typical residential move will require transporting 5,000 to 8,000 pounds of belongings.
It won't be long for the moving van to arrive at your door and there are still a million things to do. You have to hold a garage sale and get rid of stuff. Fill packing boxes with everything from pictures to place mats. Dispose of hazardous items you can't put in the van. It is a lot to cope with, but here are some pointers to make it all go more smoothly.
